  • I'm going to meet up with friends.
  • I’m going to try a new restaurant.

My plans for summer vacation:

  • I’m going to travel to the beach.
  • I’m going to take a cooking class.
  • I’m going to spend time with my family.

My plans for next year:

  • I’m going to learn a new language.
  • I’m going to travel abroad.

PRACTICE CONVERSATION

A: Hey, Rak! What are you up to today?

B: I'm going to the park to meet some friends. We're going to play football. How about you?

A: I’m going to the gym later. After that, I’ll grab lunch with a few coworkers.

B: That sounds fun! Enjoy your workout!

A: Thanks! Have fun at the park, and see you soon!

EXPRESSING PURPOSE

Here’s how you can express the purpose using "to" or "for":

  1. Using "to":
I'm going to the store to buy some snacks for the study session at my friend's house.

  2. Using "for":
I'm going to the store for buying some snacks to bring to my friend's house for the study session.

Read the following conversation. Then, combine the sentences spoken by character "B" using "to" or "for" to express a future plan.

COMPOUND SENTENCES

compound sentence is a sentence made up of two or more simple sentences connected by a coordinating conjunction (like "and," "but," "or," "so," "yet," etc.).

Here's how to form a compound sentence:

  1. Start with two simple sentences. These are sentences that can stand alone by themselves.

    • Example: "I like pizza." "I like pasta."
  2. Connect them using a coordinating conjunction.

    • Example: "I like pizza and I like pasta."

Now the sentence has two ideas connected together.

Common Coordinating Conjunctions:

  • And (adds ideas):

    • "I enjoy hiking." + "I like swimming."
Compound Sentence: "I enjoy hiking and I like swimming."
  • But (shows contrast):

    • "I wanted to go to the beach." + "It started raining."
Compound Sentence: "I wanted to go to the beach, but it started raining."
  • Or (shows choices):

    • "I can go to the cinema." + "I can stay home and watch a movie."
Compound Sentence: "I can go to the cinema or I can stay home and watch a movie."
  • So (shows cause or effect):

    • "I was tired." + "I went to bed early."
Compound Sentence: "I was tired, so I went to bed early."
  • Yet (shows contrast, similar to "but"):

    • "She studied a lot." + "She didn't pass the exam."
Compound Sentence: "She studied a lot, yet she didn't pass the exam."

Example of a compound sentence:

  • "I want to go for a walk, but it looks like it's going to rain."
    This connects two simple sentences:

    • "I want to go for a walk."
    • "It looks like it's going to rain."
And the coordinating conjunction "but" shows the contrast between the two ideas.

That's it! Just combine two sentences with a coordinating conjunction to make a compound sentence!
